I sometimes have an ache by my ear and clicking. Could grinding be the problem?

If you have a soreness in your jaw, it sometimes is located by your ear, since one of our major chewing muscles is right in front of it.  When we clench or grind, the muscles are constantly being used and can get tired and achy, and may lead to Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD).  If done over time, this may also lead to a click, or slipping of the disc, between the lower jaw and the skull.  Sometimes this is uncomfortable and sometimes not.

TMD Assessment

We recommend scheduling an appointment to look at your jaw, muscles and joint to determine what the source of your symptoms are, and your options.  It is always wise to avoid opening really wide, touching your teeth when not eating or swallowing, and avoid hard items such as ice.  Avoiding gum chewing and/or repeated actions of your jaw will also lessen symptoms.  We look forward to your call!
